Memoria...My memories of Memorial Day
By Leo Leonard
Memorial Day, perhaps, one of the more family oriented holiday for my family.
It used to be called, Decoration Day. The Peony’s would start blooming in my grandmother’s (Nora Marie Leonard’s) garden. She must have had over twenty plants of different colors. The family would cut and make many flower arrangements placing the flowers in used juice can. You see, these flowers were for the grave sites of past family members. Then off we go in my dad’s (Ovid Leonard’s) Nash Automobile to the many cemeteries all over Indianapolis. He knew where the cemeteries were located, he had good GPS. I think this gave me a respect for family.
The decoration took place a day or two before Memorial Day or Race Day. Race Day, it seemed to me the weather was always nice. I was happy because school was almost out. The family would “together” at somebodies house, with lots of good food, good conversation horseshoes, euchre tournaments and of course, the race. We had a race pool. For a buck you would draw one or two drivers name out a hat. If your drive won, you got the pot. One of my cousins would keep track of the race results so you could see how your driver was doing, we always consoled or we had laughter for the first one out. Regardless of who won the race, we all had fun.
Every May I do long for my Indiana home and the family I loved so.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13894403540574796165noreply@blogger.com
