Death Certificates: Amelia Marie Weber and Herman Joseph Weber, 1876

These two source documents, in a tragic way, are tied more closely than some. They are the death certificates of a brother and sister who died 35 days apart. Amelia Marie Weber's cause of death on May 13, 1876, is listed as diphtheria croup - 7 days. And her four-year-old brother, Herman, died also of diphtheria on June 18, 1876, after two weeks of illness. So, three weeks after Amelia died Herman came down with the same fatal illness. This disease was highly contagious and took many young lives in this period. What a sad time for this family.
I'm including both of their death certificates and transcriptions for our ongoing Family History Sources folder. The information in these documents was transcribed by a clerk from the Marion County Health Department at the address listed below. The office is open on Wednesday evenings especially for genealogy researchers. I did not receive a copy of the actual record, whether it be an entry in a book or a completed form filed by a physician. Since 1876 is in the very early stages of official death records in Indiana, I feel fortunate to have these. It appears that where the clerk typed N/A in the space that information was not a part of these particular death records.
